AP English Language & Composition Teacher – Local High School

A local high school is seeking a passionate and dedicated AP English Language & Composition Teacher to join our team. This is a full-time position with a competitive salary based on experience. We are looking for an educator who is committed to fostering a love for literature, enhancing students’ critical thinking skills, and preparing them for success on the AP exam.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibilities include instructing students on interpreting literature.
  • Sets and reinforces clear expectations and routines that are aligned with the school’s Comprehensive School Plan.
  • Develops and implements curricula and activities to meet academic standards.
  • Thoughtfully plans daily lessons and implements specific strategies to meet the needs of all students, providing extra support, enrichment, or variation of work when necessary.
  • Attends weekly LEAP meetings and works closely with ELA Instructional Coach for Training and Development.
  • Demonstrates strong content knowledge by attending Weekly Data Meetings, understanding the full elements of conceptual versus procedural understanding.
  • Designs and implements assessments that measure progress towards academic standards, and diagnoses areas of student misunderstanding.
  • Uses assessment data to refine curriculum; and informs instructional practices.
  • Demonstrates differentiation in lesson planning and is accountable for students’ academic growth; and increases each individual student’s achievement.
  • Creates a positive, achievement-oriented learning environment.
  • Reflects on successes and areas of growth as a teacher, seeks to improve performance, and responds to feedback.
  • Participates in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions. Supports parents and families in their children’s academic success through regular communication.
  • Assign books to read, including classics and contemporary novels.
  • Help students interpret literature and poetry.
  • Teach students about the structure and content of the English language, including proper grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.
  • Teach about different literary styles.
  • Create instructional resources for use in the classroom.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities
  • Create a positive and supportive educational climate which students can effectively learn.
  • Meet course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year.
  • Utilize College Board scope sequence and Unit Planning to support student performance on test.
  • Create rigorous lessons designed to support AP Writing Design, Content and Structure.
  • Utilize AP curriculum resources.
  • Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans.
  • Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Prepare and distribute required reports in a timely fashion.
  • Observe and evaluate student's performance.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by invoking approved disciplinary procedures.
  • Teach and prepare students for AP exams as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Master’s Degree Preferred
  • Previous experience teaching AP English- Language and Composition
  • Possesses or is eligible for a valid District of Columbia teaching license issued by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).
  • Successful completion of Praxis I and II exams (unless already holding a standard teaching license).
  • Strong instructional skills and classroom management.
  • Enthusiasm for and demonstrated mastery of subject matter.
  • Unrelenting commitment to students, self, and school’s constant learning and development.
  • Ability to self-reflect on teaching practices and be responsive to feedback
